Ferrari Cuts Back Its 2030 Electric Car Goals

Ferrari has officially scaled back its electric ambitions. The iconic Italian automaker announced on Thursday that it will halve its 2030 electric car target, marking a major shift in its long-term product strategy.

Back in 2022, Ferrari had outlined a bold roadmap: by 2030, its lineup would consist of 20% traditional gasoline-powered models, 40% hybrids, and 40% fully electric cars.
Now, the plan looks a lot different — 40% internal combustion, 40% hybrid, and only 20% electric.

Why Ferrari Is Slowing Down on Full Electrification

Speaking at the company’s investor day in Maranello, Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna explained the change in direction. He said the brand’s customers value personalization and exclusivity over mass production — and this realization has shaped Ferrari’s future product mix.

“It’s better to have more models with limited volume than a few models with higher volume,” Vigna said. “We understood it’s important to increase the number of ICE cars and limit the number of electric ones.”

In short, Ferrari is prioritizing variety and exclusivity instead of going all-in on electric vehicles.

Meet the Ferrari Elettrica – A New Era Begins

Despite slowing down its EV rollout, Ferrari is still moving ahead with its first all-electric model — the Ferrari Elettrica.

Expected to debut in spring 2026, this four-door powerhouse will feature four electric motors producing over 1,000 horsepower. What’s more impressive? Ferrari will build the motors and battery packs in-house at its legendary Maranello factory.

The Elettrica represents a significant step forward for Ferrari, even if it’s just one part of a more balanced strategy.

Ferrari’s EV Strategy: Selective and Client-Focused

Ferrari’s approach to electrification is deeply influenced by its customers.

“Some clients will never take an Elettrica. Others will only buy a Ferrari if there’s an Elettrica,” Vigna noted.

This client-first philosophy explains Ferrari’s cautious move — developing EVs for those who want them, without alienating its traditional petrol-powered fanbase. Between 2026 and 2030, Ferrari plans to launch an average of four new models every year, though a second EV isn’t expected before 2028, according to Reuters.

Ferrari Joins the Growing List of Automakers Slowing EV Plans

Ferrari isn’t alone in easing up on electrification. Several premium brands — including Aston Martin, Lamborghini, and Land Rover — have also delayed or scaled back their EV timelines amid slower-than-expected demand and the challenges of maintaining brand identity in an electric era.

Still, Ferrari insists that the Elettrica marks “a new dimension and opportunity” for the company — one that blends innovation with its trademark driving emotion.

Final Thoughts

Ferrari’s latest announcement highlights a shift toward balance rather than speed in the race to electrification. While the brand continues to innovate, it’s clear that the soul of the combustion engine isn’t leaving Maranello anytime soon.
