The Maserati MC20 supercar has once again proven its prowess, but this time, it’s not just about raw power and sleek design—it’s about groundbreaking autonomous technology. In a historic feat, the MC20 supercar became the world’s fastest autonomous vehicle, clocking an astonishing 197.7 mph without a driver behind the wheel.

Maserati MC20: A Fusion of Performance and Cutting-Edge AI

Maserati’s MC20 is already a marvel in the supercar world, featuring a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine delivering 621 horsepower and reaching a top speed of 202 mph. However, this latest achievement goes beyond traditional performance metrics, showcasing how artificial intelligence is revolutionizing automotive engineering.

This record-breaking run was powered by AI driver software developed by the PoliMOVE team from Politecnico di Milano, the same group behind the previous autonomous speed record of 192.8 mph set by an Indy Autonomous Challenge AV-21 racecar in 2022.

 

Kennedy Space Center: The Ultimate Testing Ground

For this high-speed autonomous test, Maserati and its partners—including the Indy Autonomous Challenge, Politecnico di Milano, and the 1000 Miglia Experience Florida—chose an iconic location: the Space Florida Launch and Landing Facility at Kennedy Space Center. This 2.8-mile-long runway, originally designed for space shuttle landings, provided the perfect environment for pushing AI-driven performance to its limits.

Paul Mitchell, CEO of the Indy Autonomous Challenge, emphasized the significance of this achievement:

“These world speed records are more than just demonstrations of futuristic technology; they are about pushing AI-driven software and robotics to the limit. Conducting these tests with a street-legal supercar helps transition autonomous racing innovations to real-world applications, ensuring safer and more reliable high-speed mobility.”

 

The Bigger Picture: Advancing Autonomous Driving Technology

Beyond setting records, this experiment serves a greater purpose—enhancing the safety, reliability, and capabilities of autonomous driving systems. High-speed testing allows researchers to evaluate AI performance in extreme conditions, improving reaction times, stability, and robustness.

Prof. Sergio Matteo Savaresi, the Scientific Director of the project and Director of the Department of Electronics, Information, and Bioengineering at Politecnico di Milano, explained:

“Our goal is to push the boundaries of autonomous driving technology. Conducting these tests in controlled environments without human drivers helps refine AI decision-making, ultimately improving safety in everyday urban driving scenarios.”
