Why is Volvo discontinuing the V90 Cross Country?
Volvo explained that the decision is part of its regular product cycle planning. Unlike the brand’s successful SUVs, such as the XC90, the V90 lineup hasn’t seen a major refresh in recent years. This lack of updates ultimately led to slowing sales and the model being phased out.
According to Volvo’s official statement:
“The decision to end production of the V90 and V90 Cross Country has been made in accordance with our cycle plans and does not affect our other estate models.”
In simpler terms, Volvo is simply moving forward with its product roadmap—and the V90 Cross Country no longer fits.
Limited stock still available
If you’re a fan of the V90 Cross Country, there’s still a small window of opportunity. Volvo noted that availability depends on the market, with a limited number of models remaining in dealerships. In the U.S., the vehicle is still listed on Volvo’s consumer website, showing around 110 units across the 2025 and 2026 model years. But once those are sold, that’s the end of the line.
So, if owning one of Volvo’s last large wagons has been on your wishlist, now might be the time to act.
What does this mean for Volvo wagons?
The departure of the V90 Cross Country leaves the Volvo V60 Cross Country as the last remaining wagon in the U.S. lineup. Volvo reassured enthusiasts that the V60 will continue for now, though the brand’s future wagon strategy remains uncertain.
Earlier this year, former CEO Jim Rowan hinted at a possible “wagon-less” future for Volvo. While no official announcement has confirmed this, the V90’s discontinuation certainly points toward a shift in focus toward SUVs and electrified models.
Looking back at Volvo’s estate heritage
For decades, Volvo wagons have been synonymous with practicality, safety, and family-friendly design. From the iconic Volvo Duett, to the beloved 245, and the refined 960 series, Volvo estates built a reputation that many still associate with the brand today.
When the V90 was introduced in 2016, then-CEO Håkan Samuelsson emphasized the importance of wagons in Volvo’s identity:
“We have provenance in the estate segment. In many people’s minds, we are known as the definitive estate brand. While the Volvo brand stands for much more than just estates, we will proudly carry forward this rich heritage with the V90.”
Sadly, less than a decade later, the V90’s journey has come to an end.
End of an era
The discontinuation of the Volvo V90 Cross Country marks the end of an era for fans of big, versatile wagons. While SUVs now dominate the automotive market, wagons like the V90 represented a unique blend of practicality, comfort, and heritage.
For enthusiasts and long-time Volvo loyalists, the news is bittersweet. Although the V60 Cross Country remains, the future of Volvo wagons looks increasingly uncertain. For now, the V90 Cross Country takes its place in history as one of the last great long-roof Volvos.
